Who Pays for Rising Health Care Prices? Evidence from Hospital Mergers

Zack Cooper is an Associate Professor of Public Health and Economics at Yale University, and Director of Health Policy at the Tobin Center.

Join Zack as he explores the impacts of rising healthcare prices.

As employer-sponsored health insurance becomes more expensive, higher health care costs effectively function as a payroll tax on labour.

Zack's research focuses on how healthcare spending affects the U.S. economy, cost variation, and market competition in healthcare.
Cooper holds degrees from the University of Chicago and the London School of Economics.

Targeting Healthcare Nudges

Toshiaki Iizuka is Professor at Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo.

Join Jishnu as he explores the effectiveness of healthcare nudges in Japan.

Jishnu will examine this issue in the context of diabetes care in Japan, where those who pass an arbitrarily set diabetic threshold receive nudges to visit a physician for a consultation.

We find that receiving the nudges increases healthcare utilization and improves health outcomes. However, individuals who respond to nudges are observably healthier, while those who would benefit most are sicker- and less likely to respond to the nudges.

Policy simulations suggest that targeting based on observable characteristics can substantially improve cost-effectiveness, highlighting the need to carefully account for the heterogeneous effects of nudges.
